What is a SEPA mandate?

A SEPA mandate is the signed authorisation from the debtor that allows a creditor to collect from their bank account via direct debit. Without a valid mandate, the debtor's bank will reject the collection order. It is the legal document that underpins every direct debit in the SEPA zone.

The mandate must include specific data: the unique mandate reference, the creditor identifier (creditor ID), the debtor's details including their IBAN, the date of signature and the scheme type (CORE or B2B). Our generator ensures no mandatory field is left blank.

Difference between CORE and B2B mandates

The CORE scheme is the universal standard. It can be used with any debtor (individuals or businesses) and gives the debtor the right to a refund for 8 weeks (or 13 months if no mandate existed). It is the most common scheme for subscriptions, fees and recurring bills.

The B2B scheme is exclusively for business-to-business transactions. The debtor waives the right to an automatic refund upon signing, which gives the creditor greater payment certainty. In return, the debtor's bank must verify the mandate exists before executing each collection.

What information must a valid SEPA mandate include?

A SEPA mandate compliant with regulations must contain at minimum:

  • Unique mandate reference (assigned by the creditor)
  • Name and SEPA identifier of the creditor (creditor ID)
  • Name and address of the debtor
  • IBAN of the debtor's account
  • Date and place of signature
  • Scheme type (CORE or B2B)
  • Payment type (recurring or one-off)
